My teaching philosophy is fairly simple. I teach what the student wants to learn. I challenge my students to set goals for themselves and then I show the way to achieve those goals. Every student of mine gets a customized curriculum base on the music they want to play, and their individual goals.
I expect a certain amount of effort from my students. It’s obvious when a student hasn’t practiced, and when they have. For beginning students 15 minutes of daily practice is sufficient, as long as the student practices every day. Lessons are more enjoyable for both the student and the instructor when a student has practiced, and comes to lessons prepared.
Some students aren’t as clear on what they want to learn, and are better served by a little more guidance and direction from the teacher. The following is a general outline of the topics I cover.
- Introduction to terminology, proper playing position.
- Reading standard notation and tab.
- Simple chords.
- More chords.
- Fingerstyle and picking techniques.
- Introduction to music theory.
- More music theory.
- Ear training.
- Tapping, sweeps, hybrid picking, banjo rolls, and other advanced techniques.
- Harmonic analysis.
